Is it possible to rejuvenate anthurium, and how to do it at home?

Anthurium has become a very popular indoor plant, which is popularly called "male happiness." Its glossy leaves and gorgeous flowers leave few indifferent.

Anthurium can bloom for a long time and at any time of the year. Caring for this epiphyte is simple, especially if you follow the rules of cultivation, care and reproduction.

Why does a flower need rejuvenation and how often should it be updated? What to do if anthurium fades after the procedure? About this and not only in our article.

Why do you need rejuvenation?

The older Anthurium becomes, the less beautiful it becomes. The lower leaves gradually die, exposing the unattractive trunk of the plant. Leaves and flowers are getting smaller, often growing with twisted tips. Sometimes the flowering of anthurium stops completely.

If the flower has lost its decorative appearance and begins to wither, then in order to revive it to a new life and again admire the chic colors of "male happiness", it is necessary to conduct a rejuvenation procedure.

How often should flower renew male happiness?

A plant that has not yet turned three years old does not need updating. Getting older, the anthurium begins to degrade: the roots and leaves die off, and the plant begins to wither. Growth and development are halting. Different types of "male happiness" require rejuvenation at different ages, which can be determined by their appearance.

Usually, Anthurium, whose age is 4-5 years, needs resuscitation. You can rejuvenate at least every year, but it is best to trim once every 3-4 years. The most favorable time for updating the flower is the period from May to June. In the summer it is warm and the plant manages to let the roots out until the first cold weather and short daylight hours.

When do I need to start the update?

To understand that anthurium requires trimming and rejuvenation, it is enough to carefully examine it. In an aging plant, as the lower leaves die off, an ugly trunk is exposed.

Unlike young anthurium, the leaves and flowers of the old plant become small, many side shoots appear and "male happiness" turns into a bush with small flowers, and eventually ceases to bloom at all. All these signs indicate that the flower should be rejuvenated.

How old can a plant be pruned?

With good care at home, anthurium can live up to 10-12 years, but for a flower to live for so long, it should be rejuvenated every four years, otherwise "male happiness" will stop its growth and flowering and may even die.

You can rejuvenate the plant at a very mature age, the main thing is that the plant is alive. In this way, the aging anthurium can be reanimated, prolonging its century.

Step-by-step rejuvenation procedure

To rejuvenate "male happiness" is necessary as follows:

  1. Cut off the upper part of the stem, which has air roots, 12-15 cm high, and remove the leaves, leaving two leaves on the handle.
  2. At the bottom of a plastic cup, with a volume of 200-500 ml, make several holes for the waste water and pour vermiculite into it, filling 1/3 of the container.
  3. Plant the cut part of the stem in a glass, deepening it by 5 cm, sprinkling vermiculite on top.
  4. Moisten vermiculite, sprinkle the leaves, and cover with a glass jar, plastic wrap or the cut bottom of a plastic bottle on top to keep the moisture constant inside - this will contribute to faster rooting of the plant.
  5. Install the greenhouse in a bright place, and if there is not enough light, then under a special lamp, maintaining a temperature of 22-24 degrees.
  6. The planted stem must be sprayed daily with soft, warm water, and the greenhouse should be ventilated, and vermiculite should not dry out.
  7. The first roots begin to germinate after 20-25 days. When new leaves appear, and the roots grow by 3 cm (in one and a half to two months), the greenhouse is taken apart and the rejuvenated plant is planted in a permanent pot with soil.

If the trunk and roots remain after cutting the top, then do not rush to throw them away. "Male happiness" you can try to revive. To do this, continue to care for the remaining "hemp", reduce watering, since there is no need to feed the leaves. Often sleeping buds wake up on an old plant, from which young shoots develop, and below them are aerial roots.

When the roots grow to a length of 1.5 cm, the flower can be transplanted into a new substrate, receiving another updated anthurium.

Care after trimming

After pruning and rejuvenation, the plant needs the same care as a newly transplanted anthurium:

  1. ambient temperature should be from 18 to 22 degrees;
  2. place the plant away from drafts;
  3. put a flowerpot with a flower in a well-lit place, but not in direct sunlight;
  4. regularly water the anthurium, but do not overmoisten the soil;
  5. Provide good drainage to drain excess water.

Subject to simple rules of care, updating the old anthurium will be successful, even if a trunk with several leaves remains from the chic flower.

What to do if the plant withers after the procedure?

If the plant was trimmed correctly and its rooting was successful, but the anthurium soon began to fade, then some errors may have been made in caring for the renewed plant.

An updated plant may begin to wilt if:

  • direct sunlight falls on it or, conversely, insufficient lighting;
  • high room temperature and dry air;
  • an excess of nitrogen fertilizers;
  • excessive or insufficient watering.

With the elimination of all these problems, the plant should return to normal and begin to grow. If the leaves still do not lift, then it can be assumed that the flower during transplantation was infected with chlorosis or fusariosis. In the first case, you should add iron when applying fertilizers, and in the second - treat anthurium with fungicides.

Attention! You can not allow a sharp change in air temperature, as well as drafts - from this the plant can die.

The procedure of plant rejuvenation does not require significant effort, and all of the above tips will help to avoid the typical mistakes of a beginner grower.
